The Vaka Taumako Project of
the Pacific Traditions Society

     Latest News: 8 MAY, 2008

Thanks to the wonders of satellite phone technology, we are receiving regular reports from Mimi who is on Taumako preparing for the arrival of a crew from BBC Bristol, which will be filming canoe building and sailing for part of a series on colonization of the Pacific. Mimi says that preparations are going well; people are working on new sails, rigging, and ama for the various canoes that will be used in the production. They are also readying vaka for a sail to the Reef Islands planned for later in the year.

At various times in the next few weeks, Larry and Meph will be joining Mimi. Dr. Larry Sherrer, who performed cataract surgery on Chief Kaveia a few years ago, will also be paying a visit to Taumako. He hopes eventually to set up a temporary theatre and perform operations for people in Temotu. This would be a wonderful boon to those who cannot afford to go to Honiara for such surgery.

Update on "The Outer Voices" Broadcast:

Stephanie reports that production is almost finished. On 2 July, Mimi and Meph will join her for a formal debut of the program at the San Francisco Yacht Club. There will be another presentation the next night (3 July) at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Newport Beach, CA. We do not yet know details of time etc, but shall post that information when we receive it.

We invite you to check out Stephanie's website  www.outervoices.org  – look in "The Project" section for details about this and other programs she has produced. (She may also have detailed information on the public presentations before we do.)

Check out the April issue of Pacific Paddler Magazine (p. 24) for some good photos of Vaka Taumako under sail in Tahua Lagoon. You can also look up  www.pacificpaddler.com for more information on this fine magazine.
