Vaka Taumako Project
Update, Added 05/01/04 Research and Residence Permits Renewed In late March and early April, Mimi and Meph made a quick visit to Honiara to renew research and residence permits. They are glad to report that the Solomon Islands' capital appears much calmer than when last they were there. Thanks to the efforts of the Regional Assitance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI), the Australian-led peacekeeping force, the city is functioning. It was good to see old friends like Donald Malassa and Aseri Yalongono in the Ministry of Education. The Ministry quickly approved extension of the Vaka Taumako Project research permit until the end of 2006.
Although Mimi and Meph were only in Honiara for a week, and did not have the
oportunity to travel to Temoto Province, they met with several friends from
Taumako who were in Honiara awaiting ship home. Rumor had it that a ship
might sail during April or early May.
IT WAS NOT ALL WORK AND NO PLAY IN HONIARA! |
