         Nohoanga Te Matangi

Images of Nohoanga Te Matangi "wind compass" of Taumako, separated into seven parts for clarity. We consider these three images to be a "work in progress" draft and not a final presentation. Illustrations drawn by M. George with permission of Ariki Kaveia.

Until now the people of Temotu have not made any drawings of their navigation system knowledge.

These images of "Nohoanga Te Matangi" (often called in English the "wind compass") are working draft drawings that I (Mimi George) created in collaboration with Ariki Koloso Kahia Kaveia of Taumako (with assistance of David Lewis, H.M Wyeth, Larry Williamson, Renate Westner, and also valuable input from Nancy Griffith, Rubellite Johnson, and Ben Finney) during 1993 - 2008 in an effort to represent some basic concepts of "Nohoanga Te Matangi" learned from Ariki Kaveia as lectures, during question and answer periods, and during voyages aboard Gryphon and the traditional voyaging canoes that are now at Taumako.

Ariki Kaveia knows much more than is shown here and it is probably overly ambitious to try to do justice to his four dimensional knowledge while making images of it in two dimension. But since he, the Ariki of Vaeakau in the Outer Reef Islands, and other Ariki in Temotu have been happy with my efforts to date, I intend to attempt to make further additions and corrections to these images based on sea time with Ariki Kaveia during April-June, 2007. The results will be posted on this website.

Special thanks to Daniel Jackson for translating a hand drawn image into these computer images.
