 VAKA TAUMAKO PROJECT VIDEOS:

If you like this Website, you'll love our two videos! If one picture is worth a thousand words, one video is worth at least a thousand pictures.

Both videos feature footage shot by Taumako students trained by Project members. None of these young men and women had laid eyes or hands on a video camera before December of 1996. Some of them had never even seen a video before they were handed a camera and told to go shoot. Yet with the most basic equipment and minimal instruction, they recorded the construction of Vaka Taumako in 1996- 7 and its first voyage in 1998. We are immensely proud of what they did. Besides what our crew shot in 1996-8, both videos contain some rare and interesting footage from 1937.

"The Heirs of Lata" (HOL) shows the building of Vaka Taumako. Watch the tree thunder to earth! Thrill to strains of muscle and song as the Taumako drag the log from the forest! See for yourself the whole process of carving, lashing, and sail-making! Finally, share the fun and excitement of launch day!

Edited by Dixon Wia of Taumako and Larry Williamson of Kaua'i. Roselle Bailey and Mimi George narrate. Running time, about 15 minutes.

"Vaka Taumako, the First Voyage" (TFV) contains some of the construction footage in "The Heirs of Lata", but, as the title implies, concentrates on the August 1998 sail from Taumako to the Reef Islands. Edited by Esther Figueroa of Juniroa Productions, this 16 min, 38 sec. piece contains shots of the canoe under sail, of dolphins greeting the voyagers, and of the traditional welcome ceremony at Nifiloli. (Get the set: First Voyage video and  First Voyage T-shirt  for $35!)

We hope eventually to raise enough money to produce the full-length broadcast quality that this endeavor deserves. These two shorts are advertisments for the feature production we want to make..

Videos are $20 each, or two for $35.
