The Vaka Taumako Project of
the Pacific Traditions Society

Internet Satellite Dish For the People of Taumako

It has been the dream of the Vaka Taumako Project that the most modern and instant communication system in the world - satellite dish with efficient internet and email capacity - would be used to strengthen the best of ancient technology and culture - the superb voyaging canoes and navigation skills of the heirs of Lata - over 1000 Polynesian people who live on the very remote island of Taumako, Duff Islands. The magnificent efforts of VTP Chairman Simon Salopuka and Hon. Stanley Tehiahua toward making this installation happen. It is now up to the community at Taumako to wisely use this rare opportunity to benefit their people educationally, culturally, and economically." The dream can now come true! The use by nga Taumako of satellite, computer, and solar technology in combination with nga Taumako making voyages to distant islands in their stone-age canoes can make the name of Taumako a force for good in the world.

On behalf of myself and the VTP I would like to give enthusiastic and heartfelt thanks to the hard work and commitment of Robert, David Ma'ai, David Leeming, Ian, and Mia for making this happen!

It is the intent of the VTP to provide the laptops needed to make the community email station available to the full community. And to contribute strongly in other financial needs of this project. Unfortunately we are still waiting for the promised funding to arrive. Last month our research permit was signed and so we are now working hard to get the promised funding in hand. The date that is set for the funds to arrive is Oct 5th.

I enthusiastically congratulate all of you who made this installation go forward despite all the delays.

Aloha, Mimi (Marianne) George
