On 30 June, Mimi gave a well-received presentation on Taumako navigation at
the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center in Sausalito. A highlight of the talk was
display (for the first time ever on a big screen!) of the diagrams that she
and Daniel the Canadian computer whiz have been working on for much of the
past year.
Because the Spaulding Center is a working boat shop, audience members
especially appreciated seeing and handling a model tepuke, samples of sennit
and hau cordage, a portion of a sail, and other examples of Taumako
craftsmanship. Many of these came from the library display at the California
Maritime Academy, which has recently been reorganized.
The Vaka Taumako Project exhibit in the Academy's simulation center remains in
place for the forseeable future. The Academy's beautiful campus, on Maritime
Academy Drive in Vallejo, is open to the public. Anyone who wants to see the
exhibit is welcome to visit.
The Spaulding Center has invited Mimi to do a talk on construction of a
tepuke. No date has been set for this presentation. As soon as we have the
information, we shall post it on this site.
